PRESS STATEMENT
The Supreme Court has formally responded to an appeal by Insight Initiative for Community and Social Development, assuring that the date for the delivery of judgement in the Osun Local Government crisis case will be communicated to all parties as soon as it is ready.
In a letter dated November 25, 2025, and addressed to the Executive Director of the organisation, ‘Jare Tiamiyu, the apex court acknowledged receipt of Insight Initiative’s earlier correspondence on the subject.
The case in question is SC/CV/773/2025 – Attorney General of Osun State vs. Attorney General of the Federation, which centres on the lingering legal tussle over the control and administration of local government councils in Osun State.
The response, issued from the office of the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, indicated that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, had directed that the organisation be informed that the judgement date would be announced when it is fixed.
“I have been directed by the Hon. the Chief Justice of Nigeria… to refer to your letter in respect of the above captioned, dated 24th day of November, 2025, and to advise you that the date of delivery of judgement will be communicated to the parties as soon as it is ready,” the letter, signed by Yusuf A. Babasoro, DCR (Litigation), stated.
Insight Initiative’s letter to the Supreme Court followed growing public concern over the unresolved status of local government leadership in Osun State.
The protracted crisis has continued to attract civil society attention, as well as tension at the grassroots level, with stakeholders calling for clarity and a definitive legal pronouncement.
The earlier appeal by the organisation, urged the court to ensure a timely resolution of the matter in the interest of peace, democratic stability, and effective grassroots governance in the state.
The group had stressed that delays in judgement were adversely affecting local administration, transparency efforts and development initiatives across the affected local councils.
Reacting to the development, Insight Initiative described the Supreme Court’s response as a “step in the right direction”, noting that while it did not specify an exact date, it provided reassurance that the matter remains under active consideration by the apex court.
The Osun Local Government crisis has remained one of the most contentious political and legal issues in the state, following disputes over the conduct of local council elections and the legality of certain office holders. The anticipated Supreme Court judgement is expected to bring a final legal resolution to the matter.
As citizens, political actors and civil society groups await further communication from the court, attention remains focused on Abuja, where the final decision that could shape the future of grassroots governance in Osun State will be handed down.
